RANCH Activities

Guests can unwind by hiking, fishing, or horseback riding.  Horseback riding is available from the beginner to the experienced.  We offer horse-drawn wagon rides, or you could hitch a ride on the Prairie Drifter, a 1956 grain truck, which tours miles of remote and historic areas of the Flint Hills.  Learn about the homestead with a historic walking tour of the ranch.  Or you can enjoy the pleasure of solitary walks, the sublime beauty of our tallgrass prairie, and unspoiled nature offered by the Flint Hills.

Cattle ranching runs in the family, and the traditions of the cowboy are honored.  We offer a cowboy experience that is authentic, active, and enriching. You may join in our daily chores, such as checking on cattle, repairing fences, feeding, or clearing brush.  Horseback riding is an essential part of this day.

During the months of late March thru April, guests can observe and join in the annual burning of the prairie.  Tallgrass prairie is usually burned off every year in controlled burns. Guests can participate in this annual ritual, and then return to the ranch house for a chuckwagon or gourmet meal.

For our younger guests, we offer the

experience of ranch choring.  This

involves feeding and caring for our dogs, donkeys,

chickens, horses, and calves.  It is very popular with the kids.

We offer lodging, with all the comforts of home, in the Flying W Bunkhouse. Our bunkhouse accommodates up to 16 persons.  It has five bedrooms, two bathrooms with showers, a washer/dryer, and kitchen.  It will be exclusively yours during your visit.  (Bunkhouse pictured at right)

We also offer catered meals to complement your time at the ranch.  Our food ranges from campfire chuckwagon cooking, picnic lunches, hamburgers, steaks, to prix fix gourmet dining.

Owner/Chef Josh Hoy is a self-taught culinarian with wide interests.  He enjoys preparing American menu classics, French and Italian bistro/café fare, and fusions of Southwestern dishes using native and local ingredients from the ranch.  We have welcomed guests to the ranch for a destination dining experience.  Josh's Harvest Moon dinners are prix fix, and reflective of the seasonal changes on the ranch.  These dinners must be requested at the time you make your reservations.
